For many years, the area between The Terrace and Wreck Pond in Sea Girt has been overrun with invasive plants such as mugwort, Japanese knotweed, and privet. While Sea Girt Borough has used goats to eradicate invasive plants between Fifth Avenue and Third Avenue, the Conservancy, with Borough approval, engaged Trident Environmental to use mechanical means in the area from Third Avenue to the homes near First Avenue.
Trident recently performed forest mowing in this area, targeting invasive plants through physical cutting and grinding before seeds mature. This is the first step in controlling invasive species and establishing native plants. New growth will soon emerge, with the expectation that most of it will be native species such as milkweed and marsh mallow. The Conservancy plans to plant additional native plants and wildflowers this fall for spring growth and blooms.
The Conservancy’s ongoing collaboration with Sea Girt Borough continues to support their shared goals: enhancing the Wreck Pond watershed and uplands, restoring native habitat, and reducing the risk of erosion and flooding.
