Why goats?

Countless hours of volunteer efforts and municipal resources — including time contributed by the Sea Girt Department of Public Works — have been dedicated in recent years to controlling invasive plant and tree species. Unfortunately, it has been a difficult challenge to make progress with this invasive plant management in some areas in town that include a topography of steep slopes, especially adjacent to areas along the Sea Girt side of the Wreck Pond Watershed. Goat grazing has been utilized as an alternative to heavy mechanical equipment, manual removal with the assistance of staff and volunteers, and herbicides in regions that are too steep and/or heavily dense to manage. The Sea Girt Conservancy is happy to be sharing the costs with the town on this project.
