Plant Description

Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis): A Shade-Tolerant Native

Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) is a perennial native to New Jersey that thrives in shaded woodlands and thickets. Growing 1 to 3 feet tall, its stems often exhibit a characteristic zigzag pattern. The plant produces small, bright yellow flowers on short stalks from the upper leaf axils, blooming from late summer into fall. Its pointed, coarsely toothed, oval leaves are alternately arranged along the stem (Jersey-Friendly Yards).

This goldenrod attracts pollinators, including bees and butterflies, providing an essential nectar source in late summer. It prefers partial shade and can tolerate various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Additionally, it is moderately deer-resistant and can adapt to soil pH levels ranging from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline (Jersey-Friendly Yards). Incorporating Zigzag Goldenrod into your garden enhances biodiversity while adding vibrant late-season color.
