Plant Description

Woodland Sunflower (Helianthus divaricatus), a perennial native to New Jersey, thrives in dry meadows and open woodlands. Reaching heights of 3 to 4 feet, it blooms from July to August with bright yellow flowers and darker yellow centers. These blooms attract butterflies and bees, while the seeds provide food for birds, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens (Pinelands Alliance).

This hardy plant spreads through rhizomes, making it ideal for naturalizing in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or along edges of forests. It tolerates dry, well-drained soils and partial shade, thriving in conditions typical of New Jersey’s diverse habitats. Incorporating Woodland Sunflower not only enhances garden aesthetics but also supports local biodiversity, benefiting pollinators and birds alike (Jersey-Friendly Yards).
