Plant Description

Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata), also known as Wild Blue Phlox, is a native perennial that thrives in moist, deciduous forests and stream banks across New Jersey. Growing 9 to 12 inches tall, it forms mats of semi-evergreen foliage and produces fragrant, tubular flowers in shades of blue, lavender, or white in spring. These blooms attract butterflies and hummingbirds, providing an important early-season nectar source (Gardenia).

Ideal for woodland gardens and shaded borders, Woodland Phlox tolerates a variety of soil types and adapts well to dry shade once established. Popular cultivars include ‘Blue Moon,’ with vibrant blue flowers, and ‘Fuller’s White,’ featuring pure white blooms (Missouri Botanical Garden). Its low-maintenance nature and support for pollinators make it a valuable addition to native gardens.
