Plant Description

The Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a native New Jersey tree known for its vibrant pink flowers that bloom in early spring, even before its heart-shaped leaves appear. These flowers, which cluster along bare branches, create a striking display and serve as an early food source for pollinators. Growing 15 to 30 feet tall with a wide, umbrella-like crown, the redbud thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils, making it an excellent ornamental choice for local landscapes (Jersey-Friendly Yards).

Beyond its beauty, the redbud offers edible flowers rich in vitamin C and anthocyanins, which can be enjoyed raw in salads, pickled, or even fried. Its adaptability and ecological benefits, including support for bees and butterflies, make it a favorite among gardeners and conservationists alike (Edible Wild Food).
