Plant Description

The cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a striking perennial native to New Jersey, known for its brilliant red blooms. Growing 2 to 4 feet tall, it thrives in moist soils along stream banks, wet meadows, and woodland edges (Jersey-Friendly Yards). Its tubular flowers, blooming from July through September, are specially adapted for pollination by hummingbirds (Master Gardeners of Essex County).

Named after the vivid red robes of Catholic cardinals (US Wildflowers), this plant has suffered from overpicking and habitat loss in some areas. Planting natives like the cardinal flower supports biodiversity and helps conserve this vibrant symbol of New Jersey’s natural beauty (Summersweet Gardens).
