Plant Description

Blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum) is a native perennial in New Jersey, often growing up to 3 feet tall. Its opposite, somewhat triangular leaves have blunt teeth, while its clusters of bright blue or violet disc flowers, about 1/4 inch long, form nearly flat-topped arrangements. Unlike many wildflowers, blue mistflower lacks ray flowers, giving it a unique appearance (Jersey-Friendly Yards).

This plant is a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it a popular choice for pollinator gardens. However, blue mistflower spreads quickly through rhizomes and can become aggressive if not managed. Gardeners are encouraged to divide it every few years and cut it back in the summer to control its growth and encourage bushier foliage (Jersey-Friendly Yards).
