Plant Description

Bigleaf Magnolia (Magnolia macrophylla) is known for having the largest leaves and flowers of any native North American tree. Its leaves can grow up to 32 inches long and 12 inches wide, while its creamy-white, fragrant flowers measure 8–14 inches across. The tree typically grows 30–40 feet tall with a broad, rounded crown and stout, spreading branches. The rose-colored, egg-shaped fruits add interest after flowering (Native Plant Trust).

This southeastern U.S. native thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers wind-protected locations to prevent its massive leaves from tearing. In New Jersey, it can be grown as an ornamental tree in sheltered landscapes. French naturalist André Michaux described it as the “queenliest of all deciduous magnolias” when he documented it in 1789 (Pleasant Run Nursery).
